TEACHING APPROACH Classes are one-on-one sessions between a student and a highly skilled instructor. The teaching method emphasizes performance as the way to build skills, theoretical knowledge, confidence as a performer, and competence as an improvisational musician. The focus on performance is in contrast to a conservatory approach where there is more emphasis on drills and exercises. The School of American Music presents music theory in its classes in the context of solving specific “problems” that arise during learning, arranging, and performing songs.
Most classes are one-on-one sessions. Adult classes usually last 45-60 minutes. Classes for younger students usually last 30-45 minutes. The time/day for one-on-one class sessions is made by arrangement between the instructor and the student.
