Born to a baritone opera-singing dad and a cellist mom, Amanda began playing the violin at the age of six after five years observing her older sister play violin. Amanda took violin lessons for many years and joined the Kalamazoo Philharmonia in 2008, where she plays in the first violin section. Music was a large part of the Barber household. The family gathered every evening for devotions which always included singing in old hymnals, often in four-part harmony. Because of this and because both parents taught piano, Amanda is also a vocalist and pianist, though violin is her main instrument. Amanda loves to see her students making forward progress and gain confidence and skill as they learn good practicing techniques as well as the ability to diagnose problems and solve them.
